Towards the end of the Eighteenth Century in Val di Fassa Trentino - Italy,
various painters started decorating the linen chests of the valley and nearby areas.
The painters began reproducing artificial marble and artificial walnut then designing and painting flowers as decorative features.
Many examples show panels with a painted vase with red roses on a light-blue background. Each plant has a bunch of flowers on every stem to represent the tree of life.
Every element painted in such a way gives the impression of a fresco.
The painted chests were made of cirmolo, walnut or fir.
On the panels, which could be rounded or squared, the artists used to paint using tempera on a thin layer made of rabbit glue or a vegetable base, called encausto.
The most antique models, which are now kept in museums, go back to the Eighteenth Century.
